If you are interested in learning and understanding Time signatures, I will give you the information you need in this post about the most common time signature which is called 4\4 timing.
Most of the rock and pop songs that are made are created in this timing. I don't want to complicate things so I will explain this to you bit differently. 4/4 timings means one measure has 4 beats. So when you listen to a metronome, it means you have to listen to 4 clicks.
What is a measure? Songs are divided into measures. So how should you identify a 4/4 timing. You need to listen to a song and you have feel the rhythm of the song. It's a good idea to listen to a song and say 1 2 3 4 aloud.
When you do this, you might not count right. So how can you make sure that you are counting right?
I will give you few tips. The first beat is always loud. So when you are counting 1 2 3 4, you will notice that the first beat is always loud after four.
Another good idea would be to start when the main drum groove starts in a song. Count 1 2 3 4 and you should start over again when the drum groove is played again. The drum groove is just a loop with some variations in a song.
This may take time but when you get a hang of this, you will discover something new in music. When you strum your guitar you will know how to stay in time. There are many other time signatures and I will covering them in the future. Just listen to some popular songs and they have to be in this timing. For example, listen to november rain by Guns N roses. It is in 4/ 4 timing. Listen to this song and count 1 2 3 4. Figure out when the loud 1 comes after 4 and when does the drum groove start again. I hope this will help you in understanding time signature 4/4. I have not given a proper sheet music explanation. I have given just some practical advise. I hope this helps!
